Welcome to the forum DTM1125...
..afraid that I can"t help, specifically, with your question I mostly camp parts of Colorado and Utah...
I do dispersed camping on public land in both states, however, either BLM land or National Forest.

Enjoy!

One of my favorites is Pike national forest near Divide in Colorado (because its relatively close and familiar; but the better spots need 4wd to get to.
Recently we have been doing some civilized dispersed camping near Eleven Mile Reservoir (a couple of friends like to fish) many locations are near roads and do not need 4WD..
a pretty fair and relatively unknown area is Medano pass near the great sand dunes national monument (basically a back door, Needs 4WD). avoid driving into the fine sand on parts of the road without good fat tires and across the creek if the water level is high as its really easy (and expensive) to get stuck.

Enjoy!
