Exclamation Should I mount small Coleman fuel tanks to exterior of SUV?

I am planning a road trip this summer that will include traveling through Death Valley and Arizona in the high temperature season. My two children will be riding in the SUV and I am worried about carrying the Coleman 1 lb. tanks in the vehicle. I used to be a hospital risk manager so I am very obsessive about safety. Would it make sense to mount them to the roof rack or the bike rack?

If your concern is that the heat will make the cans release gas or even explode, consider that that would mean the temperature inside your vehicle would have to be high enough to make it hazardous to the occupants. The disposables have been around for years and you just don't hear where they're popping off gas just because it's hot outside. If anything, since you're obsessed with safety, I would say you're better off having them inside the vehicle, shaded from direct sun.

Default Thank you

Thank you MacGyver - big fan of your show by the way! I was worried about slow gas leak or fire hazard and appreciate your thoughts. When I was a kid, my dad threw them in the trunk which in theory was a separate space from the occupants but could have been even hotter which supports the idea that they are probably pretty safe. I have never read about any issues either, but I observe that camper people always mount their propane tanks on the exterior.

You're welcome. And yeah - it was fun making a cannon out of a bicycle frame.

The only ones that typically get mounted outside are the bulk cans. They are more prone to escaping gas only because they have a valve that can open or, in extreme cases, because they were overfilled by an inept owner or propane distributor.
