Camping... defined.

No... I am not going to site Webster's or anything, but, I think it is amazing how differently the word "camping" can be defined from one person to the next.

You have the ultra brave people who take whatever they can carry in a backpack into the woods and sleep on the ground or in a hammock.

Then there are those who drive up to a nice campsite in an organized campground with a tent, a cooler, and maybe some fuel/battery operated supplies.

Some people have RV's that they tow/drive to a park where they hook up their water, electricity, sewer and maybe even cable. They have all the amenities of home... on wheels.

There are also people who rent or own a cabin furnished to varying degrees of comfort. I have camped in cabins that are nicer than my actual home!

There are variances to the above...with some people hauling tents into remote hikes in the wilderness, and some RV owners only using their campers to sleep in and not cook and watch television in. There are tent campers like myself that always get sites with electricity and close to a bathroom.

I wasn't try to outline EVERY type of camping, just show how broad the spectrum of "roughing it" can be.

I like being somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. Even more, I like knowing that campers... no matter how basic or luxurious the accomodations they sleep in... are some of the best people around!

I get a thrill out of new experiences. I've backpacked, canoe-camped, tent camped, owned several travel trailers. I really can't nail one down as my "favorite" because each choice has it's pros and cons, but they all share the same amazing end results, the joy of enjoying our natural surroundings and the inner peace that getting closer to nature brings.

I agree, and have done a little of all too. We trailer camp now with a lot of toys, but we started out in a tent with the bare essentials. I enjoy both ways, but the most important thing is just getting out and going camping either way, with or without luxuries.
