We took the Skyscout into the desert this winter and it was fascinating! The skyscout uses GPS technology, enabling users to navigate the stars! On our clear night we were able to pinpoint stars, planets and constellations! It was so easy to use and has many functions, the “Identify” button located on the side of the skyscout allows you to see the name of the target you are aiming at, It is so simple… you see a star, push the identify button, point towards your target and then you push the target button which locks in what you are looking at. It gives you the common name as well as the technical names and a full definition on the screen visually or with earphones (included)
The really interesting part of the Skyscout is the locate button, it allows you to search for what you are looking for and then it directs you via infrared light in the viewfinder. The red light moves in the direction in which you are to aim, we were soon fighting over the Skyscout trying to search for our personal zodiac constellations. The Skycout makes night vision easy with a large graphic LCD screen and red LED- backlit display. The menu options were simple to navigate as well as understand and the body of the Skyscout is made out of durable rubber and high impact plastic, giving me the peace of mind that it wouldn’t break with a little ding.
The Skyscout was deceivably easy to use, (even for someone like me who is technologically challenged) you simply put in the batteries and press the on button. The possibilities for the Skyscout are endless, whether it is backyard camping, serious camping, boy scouts, or astronomy! The Skyscout is a learning tool and a fascinating “toy” for all ages; it weighs about 16 ounces and comes in an easy to pack carrying case. The Skyscout runs on 2 AA batteries which lasted an amazingly long time. Since using the Skyscout, my kids are now running around saying “mommy, look there’s Vega” and showing off where their zodiac signs are in the sky.
