| Memorial Day Weekend |
 |
|
The weather held out for the most part. We started out on Friday May 23, 2008 and headed south of Tulsa Oklahoma to Hayburn Lake.
Our destination was Sheppard Point a Corps of Engineer park North of Kellyville Oklahoma.
Due to the rising gas prices we chose to stay a reasonable distance from home without soaking our pockets on gas.
I had to make the reservations at recreation.gov, and pretty much was site unseen. We had never been to Hayburn Lake prior much less this campground.
Friday we arrived and to our excitement found that our site was really nice. I worried since when I made the reservation a few weeks ago I had open range on all sites, none were booked. That is really unheard of around Tulsa since it is either the Corps of engineer parks or the State parks to go to.
When I did my search online for the park, it showed up as Hayburn State Park. My investigation into this was it was previously a State Park and apparently the Corps of Engineers took it over since Hayburn Lake is a Corps of Engineer lake.
Anyway, the site was better than expected. We had a site with a cover over the picnic table. Only two sites there have this luxury and we happened to be one of them. I was pleasently surprised with the fact that each site had it's own water hookup. That is not usual for the Corps of Engineer parks we had previously stayed at.
We own a pop up camper and can be hard to level, however the area to park the camper was level and we had little problems during set up.
They have two bathroom buildings and online stated only one had showers, but both did. The weather held out for Saturday and all day Sunday, but Sunday night was a mess.
We had severe storms from two in the morning until about six. I am a worry wort, so to say the least I did not get much sleep.
Storm aside, we made it through to get home safe and sound.
This trip has led us to find some things out that we had not done before, and plan to do again.
We were really orginized. I planned to have a plastic bin for the things that had to come and could not be stored in the camper. Our pop up is a eight foot box and holds only so much.
Investing into locking lids was a key. When the storm was raging outside, and I mean a down pour for over two hours, nothing got wet.
Also, by having everything in it's place led to a speedy close down of camp without to much of a sweat.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend and I look forward to a fun filled camping this year. |

| Camping first weekend of 2008 |
 |
|
Our year started off later than most years due to had to have the roof of our camper repaired from the ice storm that happen last December. However we were real stoked about getting out there for a weekend and relax and enjoy.
What a perfect weekend this past weekend was. Clear skies highs in the seventies, real nice weather. Of course there is a story here to tell, not all events happen without the story.....
I knew it was going to be cold at night in fact on saturday night they had frost warnings to the north of us. We have a pop up camper and a few years ago I purchased a small electric heater that I keep in the camper for those cold nights. I pulled that out friday night to my husband quipping "we do not need a heater, this is camping" I had it on friday night although I kept hearing those quick jabs about camping was to be without household conviences, so Saturday night I told him he could turn it off if he wanted. He did, but at about four in the morning when it got real cold, I woke up to find that he had turned that heater back on. I did mention it to him on Sunday morning, and all he could say was, it was cold....
Now, as season campers we know better to leave items out in bins that critters can get to. I reminded my husband on friday night to make sure there was nothing left out. He was sure to tell me that everything was fine.
I heard some rattling outside and had him go check, he grumbled as he got up and went opened the door to say, nothing was outside and he had not left anything out. The next morning we woke to bread all over. A racoon got into a bin and got to the loaf of bread. When I was picking it up he stated to me that he thought it was fine, but quickly made sure no other food items were in that bin. Saturday night I heard him get up, the next morning he told me that he was battling a racoon trying to go after the dog food. The raccoon was so intent on getting into the dog food, it started to drag the container it was in off to wherever.... my husband brought the container into the camper. I think he learned his lesson, but we shall see.
One of our salads was ruined in the cooler, hubby put it directly on the ice, so I had to improvise for dinner that night. I made a potato salad and put in the tomatoes, green peppers, and avacodos we brought for the other salad and it worked fine.
I cannot wait to go again. It was hard to leave, but I know there is more camping to be done this year. |
